Use of SWT products on meadows in the Basque Country

Use of SWT products on meadows in the Basque Country

Test conducted at Bixente Laby, Farmer & sheep breeder in the Basque Country (64)

Introduction

In the commune of Suhescun in the Basque Country, Bixente Laby, a dairy sheep breeder and cheese producer, has experimented with the global Eco Nature method on his meadows. The aim for him is to produce quality fodder and gain autonomy.

History:
Until now, meadows were managed conventionally (NPK, weeding, etc.). The meadows were seriously deteriorating, giving way to increasingly invasive weeds.
One plot in particular was overrun with Ravenella and Dock and the meadows were not establishing themselves. Mr. Laby had sown a seed last year, and it had not even sprouted.
He therefore decided to carry out a soil analysis as proposed by Eco Nature in order to identify the imbalances causing the problems encountered.

Analysis Results:
The results showed that this clayey-silty-sandy soil was unstable with a medium to high risk of asphyxiation, a low and unbalanced CEC value, high Potash and Magnesia levels and a too low Calcium level. The bioelectronic coordinates, for their part, showed that the soil was too oxidized, with a too low pH, and a low conductivity indicating low biological activity.

Protocol

October 2022 : on sowing with a Swiss mixture, application of SW Sol at a rate of 1 liter per ha,
December 2022: contribution of 2 tonnes of CaCo3 to the 2.3 ha of the plot,
February 2023: application of 1 litre per ha of SW Sol , just before a rainy period,
March 2023: application of 1 litre/ha of SW Protéo and 100 g of SW Plantes and again 1 litre per ha of SW Sol .

No weedkillers, pesticides, fertilizers or organic amendments were used.

The plot has nothing to do with it anymore and the Swiss mixture has clearly taken over the weeds as shown by the comparative photos between March 2022 and March 2023:

Results

In 2022, only 21 bales of silage were harvested, with an average weight of 650 kg, or 13.6 tonnes.

In 2023 , as of May 1, 15 balls with an average weight of 750 kg, or already 11.2 tons, have already been harvested.
